Sound Source Localization with Front-Back Judgement by Two Microphones Asymmetrically Mounted on a Sphere

چکیده
In this paper, we propose a novel system to localize a sound source in any planar direction using only two microphones. In our system, the two microphones are asymmetrically placed on a sphere, thus, 1) the diffraction by the sphere and the asymmetrical arrangement of the microphones give the localization cue including the frontback judgment, and 2) unlike the dummy head system, no previous measurements are necessary due to the analytical representation of the sphere diffraction. To deal with reverberation or ambient noises, we consider the maximum likelihood estimation of the direction of arrival with a diffuse noise model on a sphere. We present a real system that we built through the investigation of the optimal microphone arrangement for speech. The experimental results show that our system, which consists of two microphones mounted at ±46◦ angles on a 30mm-radius sphere, estimates a sound source direction including a front-back judgment with less than 10% errors in real environment.

Improved Sound Source Localization and Front-Back Disambiguation for Humanoid Robots with Two Ears
An improved sound source localization (SSL) method has been developed that is based on the generalized cross-correlation (GCC) method weighted by the phase transform (PHAT) for use with humanoid robots equipped with two microphones inside artificial pinnae. The conventional SSL method based on the GCC-PHAT method has two main problems when used on a humanoid robot platform: 1) diffraction of so...
متن کاملBiomimetic Sound-Source Localization
Sound-source localization systems typically comprise free-field microphone arrays. In nature, directional acoustic sensing evolved to rely on diffraction about the head with only two ears. For localization, the brain uses the resultant frequency-dependent acoustic phase and intensity differences between the two ears. We conceive a biomimetic artificial head with microphones placed on its surfac...
متن کاملSound Source Localization through 8 MEMS Microphones Array Using a Sand-Scorpion-Inspired Spiking Neural Network
Sand-scorpions and many other arachnids perceive their environment by using their feet to sense ground waves. They are able to determine amplitudes the size of an atom and locate the acoustic stimuli with an accuracy of within 13° based on their neuronal anatomy. We present here a prototype sound source localization system, inspired from this impressive performance. The system presented utilize...

We proposed a sensing method of three-dimensional (3D) sound-space information based on symmetrically and densely arranged microphones mounted on a solid sphere. We call this method SENZI (Sakamoto et al., 2008). In SENZI, the sensed signals from each of the microphone is simply weighted and summed to synthesize a listener's HRTF, reflecting the listener's facing direction. Weighting coefficien...
متن کاملThe impact of wind-generated bubble layer on matched field sound source localization in shallow water (Research Article)
This paper investigates the effect of the wind-generated bubble layer on the underwater sound source localization in the Persian Gulf shallow-water environment through computer simulation and the matched field processing technique. An underwater sound source of 2-10 kHz located at depths of 10, 45, and 75 m was considered at a distance of 4 km from a linear vertical receiver array. The estimati...
